Narrow Date, Heavily Re-Engraved "N" (in "LAND") & Narrow Gap "89"
1894 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The first of these Narrow Date varieties is perhaps one of the most interesting in this group, and it is very easy to identify. As stated in the introduction, many of the Reverse side Letters have been noticeably Re-engraved, with the final "N", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", being the most Prominent example. In fact, its characteristics are so impressive that it can be used to make a positive identification of this variety. Also, observing the size of the Gaps between the numbers in the date, can be quite useful for the identification of these variations. With both this and the following example, the Gaps between the "8" and "9" are the Narrowest to be found within this family of varieties. In addition, it can be seen that the vertical part of the "4", points to the back of the first bead, which will indicate the position of this digit on the Reverse.
