Narrow Date, Extensively Repunched "8", Narrow Gap "89" & Re-Engraved "A", "N" & "D" (in "LAND")
1894 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
This second Narrow Date variety does not have the same strikingly Re-engraved "N", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", as the previous example, but it still has been extensively Modified, leaving it with its own unique characteristics! In addition, most of the "N's" and "E's" on the Reverse Inscription have also been Altered, but the Letters "A" and "D", in "LAND", play a more significant role in the recognition of this variety! Normally, the "D" is not considered as a usual candidate for this purpose, however in this case, it can be helpful. The Obverse Lettering is seldom used for the purpose of identifying a specific variation, but here it might be helpful. Several of these letters show obvious signs of having been Modified, with the "A" and "E" being potentially useful for the recognition of this variety. With many of these variances, the "8" will often display signs of Re-punching, but in this instance, the Modifications have been more extensive than found on any of the other varieties. Also, it can be seen that the spacing between the "8" & "9" is quite Narrow, and is essentially the same as that found on the first variety. Also, it should be noted that the numeral "4", points between the 1st and 2nd beads, which are located directly beneath it.
