Medium Date, Re-Engraved "CENT" & Narrow "89"
1894 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
With these Medium Date varieties, the Numeral "4" points to the Middle Bead, but in slightly different locations above it. In order to establish a positive identification of this particular variety, it will also be necessary to examine the Reverse side Lettering. In this case, the word "CENT" can be very helpful with the recognition of this variance, since all four of these Letters have been significantly Altered. Some of the other varieties also display definite signs of Re-engraving to these same letters, but the effects are not as striking as those found on this variation. Within this group, the "T" is particularly interesting, because none of the other varieties illustrate any significant Modifications to this character. In addition, the word "NEWFOUNDLAND", exhibits some Extensive changes made to some of its Lettering, which will be quite useful to identification of this variety. One of the more interesting changes can be found on the Letter "F", which has been Notched and "Dog-Eared" on its Upper Left side. Moreover, two of the "N's" and the "A" have been extensively Re-engraved. The "A" is particularly noteworthy, because it is visibly off-centre from its position to the original character, which can be clearly seen along the Right side of this Modified character. Finally, it should be noted that the Gap, separating the "8" and "9", is about the same size as the next variation, but both of these are Narrower than the Gap found on the final Medium date variety.
