Wide Date, Low "4" & Very Wide "89"
1894 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The last of these variations has the Widest Date of all the known variances for this year. It is perhaps the most significant and scarcest to be found within this family of varieties! It is fairly easy to recognize with its unmistakable "4", which has been positioned Lower and very close to the Ornamental Beads. In addition, most of the body of the "4", is positioned outside of the area covered by the decorative bar, located directly above the date, and it is situated between the 2nd and 3rd Beads. Also, many of the Reverse side Letters have been Re-engraved with special attention to the 3 "N's", "W" and "F", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", which have all been noticeably modified. Finally, the Gaps between the "8", "9" and "4", contrast noticeably with their respective sizes! In this situation, the "9" has been positioned quite far to the Right of Centre, leaving a very Wide Gap between the "8" & "9", and a noticeably Narrower Gap between the "9" and "4"!
