Plain "T", Wide Gap "3/3"
1873 Newfoundland 50 Cents · Victoria
This is the first of two known varieties, for this year, which has a Re-punched "3" in its date. In this instance, the "3" has a Wider Opening between the Ends of this character, than it does with its associated relative. This feature has made it very easy to observe the Remnants of the Original numeral, which can be clearly seen on the insides of this Wide Gap "3". In addition, it should be noted that the "T", (in the word "CENTS") is a Plain letter showing no apparent signs of Re-engraving, which contrasts to the second variety. Also, it should be observed that the "S" on both of these varieties, has been Re-engraved, but in this case, these modifications appear to be more extensive than with its companion.
