Narrow Date, "Pointed, Tilted 5"
1885 Newfoundland 50 Cents · Victoria
This is the first of two Narrow Date varieties, both of which can be recognized by the Smaller gap separating the 8 from the 5. In this particular case, it can be distinguished from its nearest relative by observing the pointed tail on the 5, and also, by the slight Tilt of this numeral to the Right of its Vertical axis.
How rare is it?
In Barry's survey of 205 coins from 1885, 51 were this variety (24.9%). That projects to about 9,951 of the 40,000 struck.
From Barry's population report of February 2020 (see the full 1885 report). How the reports work.
