This Sub-variety is also a Narrow Date, which can be easily identified by the close spacing of its 8 and 5. It has two important features which set it apart from the other varieties. The most important of these is that the 8, which has been re-punched and the remnants of the original numeral are still visible in the eyes of the new digit! The other major characteristic which also must be considered, is the positioning of the 5, which stands almost vertically upright in the date. In addition, unlike the previous variety, the tail of the 5 is noticeably "Blunted", making it similar to the Wide Date variety. Of the original examples that were studied, it seems that most, if not all, of the coins for this particular variety, have been weakly struck on the Reverse Side across the N (in the word CENTS) and over the second 8 in the date. Finally, this type appears to be the rarest in this group, which will make for an interesting search by collectors of these NFLD coins!

How rare is it?

In Barry's survey of 205 coins from 1885, 39 were this variety (19.0%). That projects to about 7,610 of the 40,000 struck.

From Barry's population report of February 2020 (see the full 1885 report). How the reports work.
