Wide Date, Far "0", Altered "E"

This particular variation is quite interesting and it also seems to be somewhat of an anomaly. Unlike all of the other varieties, this example illustrates extensive alterations to the letter "E"! Not only is this different but also the type of changes made to this letter, seem to be very unusual. It would appear that the modifications to this Character were either the result of sloppy workmanship or they were caused by some damage to the coin itself. The specific example used for this variation may indeed be unique and therefore, it might not classify as being a variety at all! Only if another example surfaces, will it be known for sure if it is a legitimate variation. With the exception of the modified "E", this example appears to be identical to the TYPE II (a), Far "0" variance.

A Personal Note:

At the moment, I am not totally convinced that this should be included as a separate variety because I have only found one example and I cannot back up the idea that it is the result of a modified die. It is still possible that this coin is actually a TYPE II (a) variety which has been damaged at the "E". There is a mark on the letter just in front of this questionable modification but I am not convinced that it really shows any damage to this specific area either!! If anyone has found another example of this Variety or can add anything helpful, then I will be able to make any necessary changes to update this section. BMB
