Medium Date, Low "N"
1880 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
The Medium Date varieties are generally defined by the positioning of their respective "0's", beneath the Ornamental Bar, which covers approximately half of this numeral. The slight differences, found between the "0's" of these varieties, are not very dramatic, but they do illustrate the gradual progression of this digit, from Left to Right, under this Bar. The first of these Medium Date variations, is a continuation of this progression which started from the Narrow Date variety. The positioning of the "0" throughout all of these different varieties, has effectively moved the "0" closer to the Beads. (The TYPE IV - Oval "0" is not included in this group because the unique character of its "0", makes its position in the date, relatively unimportant for the purpose of identifying this particular variety!) Like so many of the variations for this date, this example also illustrates noticeable signs of Re-engraving to the Reverse Side Lettering. However, in this instance, these effects are quite subtle and not very suitable for the identification of this variety. In spite of this, there is still one notable feature which seems to be unique to this variation. The final "N", in "NEWFOUNDLAND", has been Re-engraved, resulting in the Altered Letter being positioned so Low that it now Touches the Wire Border! With all of the other varieties, there is a well defined Gap between this Letter and the Border.
