Wide Date & Re-Engraved Letters (e.g., "F" & "A")
1890 Newfoundland One Cent · Victoria
All of the Wide Date varieties are considerably scarcer than the first Narrow Date variation, and each has its own characteristics which are specific to that particular variance. In this instance, it can be defined first by the Wider Gap found between the "9" and "0" and also, it should be observed that the "0" is positioned slightly Lower in the date, and is Tilted a little to the Left of its vertical axis. With all of these varieties, the Reverse side Lettering also figures prominently into the description of these variations. In this case, the two defining Letters, are the "E" and "A", in "ONE" and "NEWFOUNDLAND" respectively. The "E" is quite interesting because the remnants from the Original digit can be clearly seen at the Base of this Letter, and it is the only known example where this occurs within this group of varieties. The "A" also displays significant signs of these Modifications, but in this instance, it appears to be Off-Centre, leaving the Original Letter clearly visible along its Right Side. However, it is not the only variance which has the "A" modified in this manner. Both the TYPE I (c), Narrow Date and the TYPE II (c) Wide Date variations, have a similarly Re-engraved "A"!
