Coin #1 in Barry's study

This is the first of two Wide Date variations which can be recognized by observing the Wider Gaps which separate the last three numerals in the date. As a result, the "3" nearly covers all of the Ornamental Loop, located directly below it. In addition, the Obverse has a Wide, Flat Rim which is missing about half of its denticles and (in some cases but not all) there is a small die crack running from the Rim and by the "Dot" on the Right side of the coin. Also, the Reverse Die for this variety, had been polished prior to its use, which has subsequently left very Fine and Raised lines on the Reverse surface of the newly minted coins. One of these lines runs through the middle of the "4" and then diagonally down through the bottom of the "3". This unusual feature might be helpful with the identification of this particular variation. On the more heavily circulated coins, these lines become increasingly more difficult to see but surprisingly, some of them are still visible! Another interesting characteristic of these lines, is that they occur in a Random pattern across the coin's surface. This is unusual because most examples exhibiting "Die Polishing" lines, have them aligned in a Parallel pattern.
