Coin #1 in Barry's study

This is the first of these known varieties and it is relatively easy to find in this group. It can be recognized by the location of the Mint Mark "H" which is evenly centered, above and between the letters "N" and "D", in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND". The second feature of this variety can be found with the positioning of the "7" in the date. In this case, it is slightly closer to the "2" than it is with TYPE II where the "7" is located more evenly between these two digits. For the sake of clarity, the TYPE I can be described as having the "7" slightly to the Right of centre. In addition, to further verify this variety, check the "1" which has been noticeably modified. It illustrates some interesting signs of Repunching, in the form of two tiny arms or "Butresses" just above the base of the digit.
