Centre "H", Thick, Re-Engraved "1"
1872 H Newfoundland 20 Cents · Victoria
This second known variety, also has its Mint Mark "H" centered above and between the Letters "N" and "D" in the word "NEWFOUNDLAND", (as it is with the previously listed example). However, there is a very slight difference with the positioning of the "7", which in this case, is located evenly between the "8" and "2" in the date. To verify this particular variety, a quick glance at the "1", will show it to be a defining characteristic, with its rather thick and deformed-looking numeral, which is very unlike the elegant "1's" found on the other varieties.
